Swine flu terms refer to influenza in pig so, pig transmits influenza virus to person, mainly to farmer and veterinaries and then after human to human transmission spread.
WHO declared swine flu (h1n1) pandemic over in August 2010 but it can spread during flu season like another flu virus. H1N1 is the subtype of the influenza virus. It’s also come from different subtype H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and many more.
DEFINITION: - Swine flu is an infection caused by several types of swine influenza virus like H1N1, H1N2, H2N1, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. Swine flu was initially seen in human in Mexico in 2009 and rest of the history you know very well (swine flu outbreak 2009).
HOW SWINE FLU VIRUS SPREAD?
There is mainly two type of spread that occurs 1. Contact with infected pigs and 2. Is Contact with an infected human.
1 CONTACT WITH INFECTED PIGS: - Any contact with an infected pig is more common to catch virus for the people who have pigs in there farm or veterinaries.
2 CONTACT WITH INFECTED HUMANS: - If the person has swine flu virus than their family or especially for those in close contact are more like to catch swine flu virus. This always occurs in a closed group of people.
WHAT IS THE RISK FACTOR TO CATCH SWINE FLU?
- AGE: - Over 65 years and children under 5 years
- DISEASE: -1.The chronic disease like AIDS 2.Chronic illness such as asthma, Heart disease, Diabetes mellitus, and neuromuscular disease.
- PREGNANT WOMEN
- The teenager who receiving long-term aspirin therapy
- Decrease immune system
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SWINE FLU?
Symptoms of swine flu are similar to other seasonal flu.
- A SORE THROAT
- A HEADACHE
- FEVER
- A COUGH
- FEVER AND CHILLS
- A RUNNY NOSE
- BODY ACHES
- WATERY RED EYE
- TIREDNESS
- DIARRHEOA
HOW TO DIAGNOSE SWINE FLU?
There is a similarity between seasonal and swine flu because most of the symptoms are as same as each other. Lab test is the only way to differentiate flu.
Test for the swine flu is a swab test of your nose or around the back of the throat.
HOW TO PREVENT SPREAD OF SWINE FLU?
Prevention is much more important than treatment of swine flu. There is some simple step to prevent swine flu to spread from person to person.
- Washing hands regularly with hand sanitizer.
- Don’t touch your eyes, nose, and mouth without washing hand.
- Avoid mass gathering when swine flu is in season.
- If you are a sick stay at home and take leave from work and school.
- Take plenty of fluid and bed rest.
- VACCINATION there is a vaccine for common flu which is also protect against H1N1 SWINE FLU You can get as a shot or as a nasal spray.
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT FOR SWINE FLU?
There are mainly three antiviral drugs are available for swine flu which is oseltamivir, peramivir, and zanamivir seem to work best. Antibiotics won’t help to do anything for the treatment because the flu is caused by the virus.
Other symptomatic relief by analgesic, antipyretic, and some anti-cold are given according to symptoms.
